Markham at a Glance
Just north of Toronto, Markham is
home for many commuters who work in Toronto, but prefer a smaller community to
call home. Markham is made up of four communities: Markham, Milliken, Thornhill
and Unionville. The city enjoys a mixture of industry from large corporate headquarters
to smaller farming communities. Although Markham lives in the shadows of its southern
neighbour, quite literally since it borders Toronto, Markham celebrates its individual
character. A number of festivals and events are regularly held, including the
Markham Fair with its entertaining events and exhibits, and the sweet sounding
Markham Village Music
Festival. Art appreciators may tour the Varley
Art Gallery, which houses works by regional and international artists, as
well as an interesting collection from F.H. Varley, a member of the Group of Seven.
The Markham
Centre for Performing Arts offers theatre, dance and music performances regularly.
Shoppers and diners may wish to retreat to Markham
Village, a real working village complete with retail stores and restaurants.
